The secret to staying in His love

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as l have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in His love.

Jn15:10

Jesus is showing the relationship between obedience and abiding love in this quote by revealing the secret of staying in love with the Father simply as obedience to His commandments. The Greek word for love used here is “en te agapao”. It is indicative of not just the love of a disciple for Christ alone, or vice versa; but it is the Christ- principle of love which includes both.

This kind of love is relational. It does not refer to the emotional feeling that we sometimes call “love”. It is not about loving God in our hearts or about the deep feeling we have about Him. That is why Jesus is speaking of the greater manifestation of love in practical terms, not emotions or the depth of feeling. Not quite the emotional and warm “feelings” we get or associate with when we pray. This kind of love is based on whether or not we obey Him in the things He has commanded us to do, or not to do.

Greater love manifests itself through the willingness and readiness to sacrifice for others. To lay our lives down for others. That’s love in action! From Jesus’ point of view, then, love should be active not passive. Love for God should be bundled up in love for others too. It doesn’t work any other way.

There are times when we doubt if God really loves us (though we think that we love Him in our heart of hearts). We desire to know the secret of enjoying God’s love and favor. Here it is. If we are going to stay in His love and His loving care and favor, then we must keep His commandments which are that we should love Him absolutely and to love our neighbours as ourselves. This has been the secret all along. Fact is, the natural evidence of love for God is the desire to obey Him. And if we love our fellow men, we will not want to harm them.

We may love God, but not absolutely. And we may even love others more than we love God! Are there people or things we love more than Him that make us disobey God and tend to displease Him? Then there’s no way we can enjoy the full benefits of His love. Set things right, set the records straight and get your priorities right. May we enjoy grace forevermore. He will surely continue to lavish His love on us.
