“God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and His Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed Him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace.” 1 Peter. 1:2
Apostle Peter wrote this letter in about 64 A.D. It was first written to the churches in several provinces of the Roman Empire located in what is now present day Turkey. It was written to encourage the believers there to follow in the steps of Christ and to stand firm in their faith during trials.
Peter addresses his readers as those who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God, before the creation of the world. All Christians share in this election, and it is a position of favour.
However, it’s a privilege that comes with great responsibilities. What Christians who rejoice in the fact of being chosen must also realize is that we were chosen ahead of time to fulfill a definite purpose.
“For God knew His people in advance, and chose them to become like His Son “
It is also for this very purpose He gave us right standing with Himself after He called us. And even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes.”
Therefore, we have been chosen for obedience to Jesus Christ. We were not chosen because we are special in any way, no! Instead we were chosen to be conformed to the likeness of His Son in order to qualify us to be part of God’s own family.
Many of us misunderstand God’s election because we have focused mostly on the privileges without paying much attention to the great responsibilities that go with them. We must be conformed fully to the image of Christ in order to access the full privileges of being elected.
All that we are enjoying now as believers – cleansing, justification, and therefore having a right standing with God; the indwelling Spirit of Christ, adoption, hope of eternal life and other privileges are all on account of Christ. We have these at our disposal just for the purposes of becoming like Him.
Holy Spirit makes us progressively holy. His workings in us make us obedient to Him, and we enjoy cleansing through the blood of Christ. Boast not because you are a chosen anything if you are not aspiring to Christ likeness, holiness and obedience to Holy Spirit. Be ye holy because Christ our “Template” is holy. Remember the repetitive words of Jesus in the book of Revelation, ” to every one who is victorious. . .” , and that is speaking to God’s chosen people. Our election was purpose -driven. We have been chosen and called according to His divine purpose. We must therefore cling to this purpose to the end in order to be enthroned as coheirs with Jesus, our big Brother.
