” Therefore l, a prisoner of the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God”. Eph 4:1
Every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ has been called by God. Called to be His own, called to be light and salt in this world (Matt 5:13 & 14), and called to show forth His praise and glory.
It is tempting to assume that it’s only those believers listed in the “offices” of Ephesians 4:11 that are called. We must do well to remember that an apostle, prophet, evangelist , pastor and teacher are first of all believers and called to live as all other believers in the body of Christ.
That’s why Christ should be our standard, not men.
We also tend to focus on those who are always found actively playing some roles in the church, and therefore such people are always put on the scale, being watched, assessed, criticized or condemned while we excuse ourselves from the several callings God expects us to fulfil… Individually.
Every true believer has a call on their lives. First, a call to accept Christ and the salvation He has made available for all those who call on His name (1Cor1:24). All have been called to belong to Jesus (Rom 1:6).
We were all called out of darkness (1 Pet 2:9) into His marvelous light. A call to holiness and godliness (1Thess 4:7).
A call to show forth God’s praise, called according to God’s own purpose (Rom 8:28).
Called to do good and to suffer with Him and for His name (1Pet 2:21). We have again been called to overcome evil with good and not to pay back evil with evil.
All true believers have been called to live in freedom (Gal 1:6), and called to live in peace (Col 3:15).
We have all been called to share in God’s kingdom (1Thess 2:12); and in His eternal life (1Pet 5:10).
For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God” (1 Pet 1:23)
Our call to a new life in Christ is eternal and will last forever. Our call is forever, not just for a brief period of time, or even in our life time! What God has called us to be and also to stand for in this world cannot be withdrawn. “For God’s gifts and calling can never be withdrawn” (Rom 11:29).
Is God calling you today to suffer for Him, to respond in love to someone’s hatred or ill treatment?
Whatever you do or go through as you respond in faith to the several calls in your life, always remember this:
“. . . He who calls you is faithful” ( 1 Thess 5:24).
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all.
